About our Trainers

Wendy Krohn

Wendy has over thirty years experience both riding and teaching. She has been passionate about the sport from the age of five.  Wendy grew up in Connecticut where she was mentored by Gincy Bucklin, Emerson Burr and Olympic Gold medal winner Leslie Howard.  Wendy had great success as a junior in the hunter, Equitation and jumper arenas.  Qualifying and competing in the ASPCA Maclay finals at Madison Square Garden, the AHSA Hunter Seat Medal Finals at Harrisburg and the prestigious Washington International Medal Finals. She has a strong foundation in Equitation and believes strongly in developing the "power of position".

After high school Wendy took a break from competitive riding to attend the University of San Diego where she earned a double degree in Psychology and Sociology.  During her time in San Diego she had the privilege of working under dressage great Stefan Peters as a working student.  There, she learned invaluable flatting techniques.

In 1998 Wendy turned professional and worked along side and assisted New Zealand Olympian Peter Breakwell for ten years.  Together, they ran a top notch training and show barn in Portola Valley,  California.  In 2009 Wendy returned to her roots back East and joined Sleepy Hollow Country club in Sleepy Hollow, New York to run and manage their riding and show program.  There, she met her husband Nick and they ventured to Minnesota together to get back to his roots. During the one year spent there Wendy had a private job with a family riding and showing exclusively throughout the Midwest.

In 2012 Nick and Wendy decided they wanted to be out West. In April, they moved to Oregon to start Westport Stables in beautiful Talent, Oregon. Wendy and her students have had great success here.  From taking students to their first horse show to winning the zone 9 Maclay regionals and qualifying and competing in the ASPCA Maclay finals and USEF Dover Medal finals back East four years in a row.  Because of this facility's Spacious layout, with huge stalls and runs and gracious turn outs Wendy has been able to start young horses correctly and keep competitive Grand Prix horses super sound and strong.

Wendy has vast experience riding, training and competing young horses and upper level Jumpers.  She is very proficient in getting horses ready and prepared for their owners to compete  in the show arenas.  Her approach is systematic, soft and patient.  Time is taken with each horse and student's program.  Each horse and student learn in their own way and the day to day training program reflects that.  Solid horsemanship and fostering the partnership between horse and rider is of utmost  importance here.

The atmosphere at Westport is fun and lighthearted.  The horses are sound, happy and our number one priority.

"Our daughter has been riding at Westport Stables for over three years.  In this time, Wendy has helped our daughter blossom from a timid beginner into a confident skilled rider who continues to learn and grow every day.  Wendy’s ability to explain riding techniques in a positive supportive manner creates a warm and caring environment for riders of all ages to learn.  Our daughter is not only learning how to safely and effectively partner with her horse in the saddle, but Wendy continually helps our daughter build her knowledge and skills of horsemanship out of the saddle, as well.  Responsibility, compassion, sportsmanship and teamwork are just some of the life skills that my daughter takes into her daily world away from the barn.  We could not imagine our daughter riding anywhere else than with Wendy at Westport Stables."

"As a parent of a child, now grown into a young adult riding at Westport Stables, I'd like to share my appreciation for all we have gathered from being part of this team and going on this journey.  Wendy has heart for the horses, as well as the kids who love them. She facilitates my daughter's partnership with her horse both at the shows and at home. Seeing each of them clearly, supporting the bond and deep connection that time with horses inspires. Nick's friendly easy-going manner, along with his talent for keeping things running smoothly adds an essential ingredient in creating a successful horse program.

Together Nick and Wendy are building community as well as their business.

My daughter, myself, and our horses have all grown and benefitted from their efforts. Thank you Nick, Thank you Wendy and thank you to all the dedicated staff at Westport stables."

Gratefully, Jenn Lieber
